Fitness Friday: Running & Nutrition
Happy Friday everyone!
It has been a while since I’ve posted a Fitness Friday post. {If anyone has any topic ideas please let me know.}
One thing I want to better educate myself on this year is fueling my body properly during marathon training. I don’t really think it was a problem last year, I just want to have more options. Once my Saturday long runs got up to 15+ miles I started eating the same meal every Friday night, pasta. On Wednesday nights, speed work nights, I would be starving about a mile into the run. I decided this year I need to try new foods and find what works for me.
I logged onto my local library’s website and did a search for marathon training and nutrition. A long list of books popped up. A fellow team Wheaties runner recommended Racing Weight so I added that to my list. I also requested The New Rules of Marathon and Half Marathon Nutrition, The Paleo Diet for Athletes, and The Runner’s World Big Book of Marathon Training.

Only two of the books have came in so far. I am just about finished reading the Runner’s World book and so far I really like it! They included several recipes including some smoothies I can’t wait to try (the maple pumpkin pie sound delicious)! I turn to Runner’s World when I have any questions related to running. The eating everyday chapter is what I found most useful. I know I need to up my protein, and this chapter is full of recipes to try!
I started Racing Weight the other day and I was excited to see famous runners and a log of what they eat. I also like how this book breaks down different body types (skier, runner, cyclist, etc). I found the BMI vs body composition information really interesting. I am mostly looking to add to my daily diet to support training and that is what this book is geared towards. This book is going to be a great resource!
For those runners out there what nutrition tips do you have?
What’s your favorite pre-run snack?
Have any other books I should check out!
{the response from my last post was more than I was expecting, thank you to those who left me encouraging words. I have some exciting things lined up for myself

February 1, 2013 at 5:50 pm (136 days ago)I can’t wait to hear what you think of these books in more detail. Post tips and meals, too. I would definitely be interested in fueling for other workouts besides the LR. I feel like that’s the only one I know what to eat for because it’s so simple and straightforward.
